In our next Fantasia Feature, we sat down with Emma Prince (double bass) to ask her about her inspirations and what she's most excited about for our BBC Proms debut this summer.

When did you start playing Double Bass, and who has inspired you along the way?

I started playing double bass when I was 7 years old at my local primary school.

The first memory I have of feeling inspired to pursue orchestral playing, was watching a BBC Philharmonic concert at Sheffield City Hall - that performance is still a core memory for me! I knew from then that I wanted to have a go at playing in an orchestra because the bass section looked like they were having loads of fun. In my career now, I am endlessly inspired by my friends and colleagues. I am so lucky to be continually surrounded by such talented and supportive musicians.

What do you love most about playing in an orchestra?

I sound like a broken record but it’s definitely the people! I love working in a team and making new connections along the way. It’s great to catch up with my colleagues at each Fantasia project, and it’s really fun getting to create music together - everyone is so dedicated. I particularly love the collaboration aspect and the sheer versatility of the ensemble.

What music do you like listening to beyond classical?

At the moment I have Olivia Dean’s album ‘Messy’ on repeat - her voice is amazing! After a concert you’ll always find me listening to Nick Drake to wind down from the post-performance high. I also love folk music and so Kate Rusby is a particular favourite of mine, especially around Christmas time. (It helps that she is a fellow Yorkshire girl too!)

What instrument do you secretly long to play?

In terms of sound, I wouldn’t exchange the bass for anything! In terms of transportability… everyone at Fantasia knows I would swap it for something smaller and lighter in a heartbeat! However if I had to choose another instrument, I’d say the clarinet. I love how quietly and intimately it can play, and how it can really draw people in.

Finally, can you tell us what you are most excited about for Fantasia Orchestra's BBC Proms debut this summer?

I’m excited to showcase a really varied programme, with amazing arrangements and collaborations. I think that Fantasia Orchestra has a chance to demonstrate what the future of classical music could look like, and that’s a very exciting thought!
